A
ARP Studs
Aftermarket head studs made by ARP (Automotive Racing Products), commonly used to replace factory head bolts on 6.0 and 6.4 Powerstroke engines. ARP studs clamp the cylinder head more evenly and with greater strength, reducing the risk of head gasket failure under high boost — a core part of “bulletproofing” a 6.0.

Any part, tool, or component made by a company other than the original vehicle manufacturer (OEM). Aftermarket parts range from direct OEM-equivalent replacements to performance upgrades.
B
Boost
Common term for the increased air pressure a turbocharger forces into the engine above normal atmospheric pressure, measured in PSI. More boost generally means more available power, within the engine’s design limits.

Community term for a set of well-known preventive upgrades performed on 6.0 Powerstroke engines to address their most common failure points — typically including ARP head studs, a new EGR cooler and oil cooler, and a upgraded FICM. Not an official term, but widely understood in the Powerstroke community.
C
CAC (Charge Air Cooler)
Also called an intercoolerA radiator-like component that cools compressed air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine. Cooler air is denser, which improves combustion efficiency and power. CAC boots (the rubber connectors) are a common source of boost leaks.
Cetane Rating
A measure of diesel fuel’s ignition quality, similar in concept to octane rating for gasoline. Higher cetane fuel ignites more readily under compression, which can improve cold-start performance and reduce engine noise.
Common Rail
A fuel injection system (used on the 6.7L Powerstroke) where all injectors draw from a single shared high-pressure fuel line (“rail”), allowing precise, independently-timed injection events. More advanced than the older HEUI system used on earlier Powerstroke generations.
CP3 / CP4 Fuel Pump
High-pressure fuel pump designs (CP3 used on early 6.7L, CP4 on some later applications across the diesel industry) responsible for generating the extreme pressure needed for common-rail injection. Pump failure can contaminate the entire fuel system with metal debris.
D
DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)
A urea-based fluid injected into the exhaust stream on modern diesels (6.7L Powerstroke) to chemically reduce NOx emissions via the SCR system. Stored in a separate tank and requires periodic refilling — running out will trigger reduced-power modes on most trucks.

An exhaust component that physically traps soot particles to reduce emissions, standard on 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke engines. Requires periodic “regeneration” (regen) to burn off trapped soot; a clogged or failing DPF can trigger reduced power and warning lights.
DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)
A standardized alphanumeric code (e.g. P0299) stored by the vehicle’s computer when it detects a fault. Retrieved using a scan tool; the starting letter and numbers indicate the affected system and specific fault type.

EBP Sensor (Exhaust Back Pressure)
Measures pressure in the exhaust system, used by the engine computer to manage turbocharger boost and exhaust brake function. A failing EBP sensor can cause poor performance or false fault codes.
ECM / PCM (Engine / Powertrain Control Module)
The engine’s onboard computer that manages fuel injection timing, turbo boost, emissions systems, and more, using inputs from dozens of sensors. Aftermarket tuners modify the ECM/PCM’s programming to change performance characteristics.
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
An emissions system that routes a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and reduce NOx emissions. Used across all modern Powerstroke generations; the EGR cooler within this system is a well-documented failure point on the 6.0L and 6.4L.

The temperature of exhaust gases, monitored to prevent turbocharger and emissions component damage from excessive heat, especially under heavy towing or aggressive tuning. Many performance gauges display EGT as a key monitored value.
Exhaust Brake
A device that restricts exhaust flow to create engine braking effect, helping slow the truck (especially useful when towing downhill) without relying solely on the service brakes.
F
FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module)
A dedicated computer module on the 6.0L and earlier Powerstroke engines that supplies high voltage (around 48V) to operate the fuel injectors. Internal capacitor degradation over time is a well-known cause of intermittent no-start or rough-running symptoms.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating)
The maximum allowable combined weight of the truck, passengers, cargo, and any attached trailer, as specified by the manufacturer. Exceeding GCWR can affect handling, braking, and drivetrain longevity.
Glow Plugs
Heating elements that pre-warm the combustion chamber to aid cold starting on diesel engines. Diesels rely on compression heat rather than a spark plug, and glow plugs help ensure reliable ignition in cold weather.
H
Head Gasket
The seal between the engine block and cylinder head that maintains compression and prevents coolant/oil from mixing with combustion gases. Head gasket failure is a well-known risk on the 6.0L Powerstroke under high boost, often addressed with upgraded head studs during bulletproofing.
HEUI (Hydraulically-actuated Electronically-controlled Unit Injection)
The fuel injection system used on the 7.3L, 6.0L, and 6.4L Powerstroke engines, which uses engine oil pressure (via the HPOP) to fire the injectors electronically. Replaced by common rail injection starting with the 6.7L.
High-Output
A factory trim designation (used on later 6.7L Powerstroke models) indicating an engine tuned for higher horsepower and torque output than the standard configuration, typically paired with upgraded drivetrain components.
HPOP (High-Pressure Oil Pump)
Generates the high oil pressure needed to fire the injectors in a HEUI fuel system (7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L). A failing HPOP or its related ICP sensor can cause hard starting, stalling, or power loss.
I
ICP Sensor (Injection Control Pressure)
Monitors oil pressure in the HEUI fuel system and reports it to the engine computer, which adjusts the HPOP accordingly. A failing ICP sensor commonly causes hard starting, rough idle, or stored fault codes on 7.3L and 6.0L engines.

The component that sprays precisely metered, atomized fuel directly into each cylinder for combustion. Injector design and control method differ significantly between HEUI (older) and common-rail (6.7L) systems.
IPR Valve (Injection Pressure Regulator)
Controls oil pressure to the HPOP on 7.3L and 6.0L engines, regulating how much pressure is available to fire the injectors. A failing IPR valve can cause hard starting, rough idle, or a lack of power.
L
Lift Pump
A lower-pressure fuel pump that draws fuel from the tank and supplies it to the high-pressure pump/injection system. Factory lift pumps on the 6.0L and 6.4L are widely considered undersized, making aftermarket lift pump upgrades a common preventive modification.

MAF Sensor (Mass Air Flow)
Measures the volume and density of air entering the engine, allowing the ECM to calculate the correct amount of fuel to inject. A dirty or failing MAF sensor can cause poor performance, rough idle, or incorrect fuel trims.
MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure)
Measures air pressure in the intake manifold, helping the ECM monitor boost levels and adjust fuel delivery accordingly.
N
NOx (Nitrogen Oxides)
A group of pollutant gases formed during high-temperature combustion, regulated by emissions standards. Diesel emissions systems like EGR and SCR/DEF exist primarily to reduce NOx output.
O
OBD-II
The standardized onboard diagnostics protocol used by all US vehicles since 1996, allowing a compatible scan tool to read diagnostic trouble codes and live sensor data through a common connector.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
Refers to parts made by the same manufacturer (or its approved supplier) that built the original component for the vehicle, as opposed to aftermarket alternatives.
Oil Cooler
A heat exchanger that keeps engine oil within a safe operating temperature range, especially important under heavy load. Oil cooler blockage or failure is a known contributor to overheating issues on the 6.0L Powerstroke.
P
Payload
The maximum weight a truck can carry in passengers and cargo, not including any towed trailer. Different from towing capacity and GCWR, and specific to each truck’s exact configuration.
PID (Parameter ID)
A specific data channel a scan tool can read from the vehicle’s computer — for example, boost pressure, EGT, or fuel rail pressure. Advanced diagnostic scan tools allow monitoring multiple PIDs simultaneously in real time.
R
Regen (Regeneration)
The process by which a DPF burns off accumulated soot at high temperature to restore filtration capacity. Can happen passively during normal highway driving or be actively triggered by the ECM, sometimes with a temporary reduction in fuel economy.
S
Scan Tool
A diagnostic device that connects to a vehicle’s OBD-II port to read trouble codes and live sensor data. Ranges from basic code readers to advanced bidirectional tools capable of running tests and adjusting settings.

An emissions system that uses injected DEF to chemically convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor in the exhaust stream, used on 6.7L Powerstroke engines alongside the DPF.
Sequential Turbo (Compound Turbo)
A twin-turbocharger setup (used on the 6.4L Powerstroke) where a smaller turbo works with a larger one in sequence to improve response across a wider RPM range compared to a single-turbo design.
T
Torque
A measure of rotational force, expressed in pound-feet (lb-ft). Diesel engines are known for producing high torque at low RPM, which is what makes them especially effective for towing and hauling heavy loads.
Tow/Haul Mode
A drive mode that adjusts transmission shift points and throttle response for improved control and reduced strain when towing a trailer or hauling a heavy payload.
Tuner / Programmer
A device or software that modifies the engine computer’s programming to adjust performance characteristics like power output, shift points, or fuel delivery. Aggressive tunes can outpace the factory fuel system’s capacity, a common reason for aftermarket fuel system upgrades.

A device that uses exhaust gas flow to compress incoming air, increasing the amount of air (and therefore fuel and power) the engine can use per cycle. Turbo design has evolved significantly across Powerstroke generations, from fixed-geometry to variable-geometry to compound setups.
U
ULSD (Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel)
The standard diesel fuel sold in the US since 2006, with sulfur content reduced to 15 parts per million to reduce emissions and protect modern emissions equipment like the DPF and SCR system.
Up-Pipes
The exhaust pipes connecting the engine’s exhaust manifolds to the turbocharger. On the 6.0L Powerstroke, factory up-pipes are prone to cracking at the flanges, a well-documented cause of exhaust leaks and underboost conditions.

VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger)
A turbocharger design (used on the 6.0L Powerstroke) with adjustable internal vanes that let it optimize boost response across a wider range of engine speeds, compared to a fixed-geometry turbo. The VGT actuator that controls vane position is a common failure point.
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
The unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle, used to verify exact factory specifications, engine type, and fitment for parts. Always cross-check part compatibility against your specific VIN rather than year/model alone.
W
Wastegate
A valve that regulates exhaust flow to the turbocharger, controlling maximum boost pressure and preventing over-boost conditions that could damage the engine.
